Hiking
South
Mountain - With more than 58 miles of trails
and 16,000+ acres, South Mountain is the largest municipal park in the nation.
It has something for hikers of all skill levels, a terrain that shows the
beauty of the Sonoran Desert, and magnificent views of the city.
“A” Mountain (Hayden Butte) - Urban hiking at its best.
Adjacent to the Mill Avenue District is “A” Mountain. Take a short hike up for
a fantastic view of Tempe and the Mill Avenue District. Along the way, keep an
eye out for centuries-old, Hohokam petroglyphs, pot shards and other artifacts.
Papago
Park -If you’re looking for an easy hike with fascinating scenery, stop
by Papago Park. Along with hiking, you can also enjoy picnic sites with
ramadas, grills, fishing lagoons and bike paths.

ASU Museums
For a dose of Arts & Culture, wander through one of ASU’s many museums. For
art, choose from the widely praised
ASU Art Museum and the
Ceramics Research Center or walk throughout the campus to view the ASU
Public Art Collection, where pieces are prominently placed for all to enjoy.
For science, check out the
ASU Planetarium, the
Center for Meteorite Studies, or the

Tempe
Town Lake and Tempe Beach Park
Located adjacent to the Mill Avenue District, this is a wonderful place to be
active while in Tempe. Tempe Town Lake is a two-mile recreational haven for
kayaking, sailing, rowing, jogging, skating or just picnicking.

Papago Park
Along with the scenery, complete with the hiking and distinctive
geological formations, Papago Park is also home to a few of Tempe’s most
memorable attractions.
Arizona
Historical Society Museum – Learn about
central Arizona’s history! Understand the impact of water on our desert, the
development of agriculture, prominent individuals who shaped Arizona’s history
and how our desert was transformed into the urban center it is today.
Desert Botanical Garden
– Surround yourself in 50 acres of the beauty of the desert at this living
museum. The grounds are home to more than 50,000 species of desert plants from
around the world including rare, threatened and endangered species. Also, enjoy
tours, exhibits, special events and more.
Hall of Flame
Firefighting Museum – Along with the Hall of
Heroes, this museum chronicles the history of fire fighting, inviting visitors
to learn more about this perilous occupation. Featuring different kinds of
apparatus on display dating from 1725 to 1969 and exhibits on fire safety and
for kids.
Pueblo Grande
Museum – Experience a prehistoric Hohokam
ruin. The Hohokam, the people who inhabited Arizona up to a thousand years ago,
mastered the irrigation of this dry area, and built canals that were the
foundations of the ones we use today. Explore exhibits on the Hohokam,
archaeology and the Southwest.
Phoenix Zoo
– Voted one of the top 5 zoos for kids in the nation, this zoo captivates
children of all ages. With approximately 2.5 miles of walking trails, spend a
sunny afternoon learning about animals from the Arizona desert, as well as
those throughout the world. You can bring a picnic lunch to share with family,
or eat at one of the cafés located inside the zoo.
